Description

Description

The Brenner Base Tunnel is a 64-kilometer railway tunnel under the Alps between Austria and Italy, designed to take trucks off the pass overhead and improve freight and passenger rail transport. It is the longest railway tunnel ever built, with a flat grade allowing longer, heavier freight trains to run under the Alps without climbing. The tunnel includes two single-track tubes and an exploratory tunnel for drainage and maintenance. The project has used nine tunnel boring machines, with the last two German-built machines named Wilma and Olga currently finishing the final stretch on the Austrian side. The tunnel is expected to open for passenger service around 2032, with a total cost of approximately $11.5 billion.
