Description
Description | The installation of a new storm sewer system will diminish the impact of extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfalls, by alleviating the loading on the sanitary sewer system. It will also reduce erosion by replacing two problematic outfalls to the Saint John River. Existing catch basin connections to the sanitary sewer line will be removed and connected to the new storm sewer line. The proposed project consists of upgrading the underground infrastructures of the Broadway Boulevard in Grand Falls, NB. The main purpose of the project is to continue the installation of a new storm sewer system. This will alleviate the sanitary sewer system loading, therefore reducing the load on the waste water treatment plant, reducing downstream sanitary sewage pumping station overflow events and mitigating the adverse effects of natural hazards on public properties. The works involves the supply and installation of storm sewer collection system components, the replacement of existing sanitary sewage system components, the replacement of existing water distribution system components, supply and installation of new water distribution system components, roadways backfilling, reinstatement of sidewalks, the supply and placement of asphalt concrete and site restoration. During heavy rainfalls, the existing system is not capable of handling the volume of surface water being collected, thus causing sewage backup and damages in some public properties. Contributing to the problem is the fact that only a combined sewage collecting system is present in this section of the town, therefore, the majority of the collected storm sewage flows are directed to the combined sewage collecting system. This situation has a direct impact on the Town’s waste water treatment system and on damages to public properties during heavy rainfall events. The installation of the new system will mitigate the effects of natural hazards. |
