Description | A proposal by R. Buckminster Fuller in 1960 to construct a giant geodesic dome over midtown Manhattan, spanning from 62nd Street down to 22nd Street. The dome was designed to regulate weather and reduce air pollution, with a mile-high and 1.8 miles across structure made of wire-reinforced, one-way vision, shatterproof glass. It would maintain a comfortable temperature inside, eliminating the need for heating or cooling individual apartments. The dome was estimated to weigh 4,000 tonnes and could be assembled in 3 months using 16 large Sikorsky helicopters at a cost of $200 million. |
