Building Cycling Futures

A new international master’s programme, Cycling Futures, that will educate future experts on cycling as a mode of sustainable transport will be developed within the project Building Cycling Futures (BCF). A consortium of three HEIs, one in the Netherlands, one in Sweden and one in Germany, will collaborate to develop a fully integrated curriculum in which students will spend a semester at each partner institution. The aim of this master’s programme is to teach talented students from around the world the concepts of sustainable transport and mobility while exposing them to different cities and cultures. Through this approach, experts will emerge who are capable of thinking laterally to conceive and create the cycling cities of tomorrow. Within the BCF project, financial, administrative and organisational aspects of the international programme will be clarified, a communication strategy for attracting excellent students worldwide will be prepared, and a comprehensive consortium agreement will be formulated and signed. The accreditation process for the master’s programme will begin at all partner universities by the end of the BCF project. The consortium will strive for a joint degree programme and an EMJM application is planned. To reach these objectives, an adapted scrum project management framework will be implemented. The consortium will work in one-month-long “sprints” to accomplish set tasks for developing the master’s programme. The consortium will meet once a month online to evaluate progress, discuss obstacles, and prepare for the next sprint. Six in-person workshops are planned during the project, two at each of the partner institutions. Each workshop will address a particular topic and relevant experts from the partner HEIs and other external bodies will be invited.
