Description

Description

There is a significant gap between the number of girls and boys participating in sports, with girls often quitting earlier. Gender roles shape children's perception of competence in sports from a young age. To help girls gain confidence, overcome fear of failure, and enjoy physical activity, our Building Confidence for Basketball Girls (BCBG) project supports female basketball players aged 11 to 18 in developing long-term sports engagement and self-confidence. Our project unites three women-only basketball clubs, working alongside a psychologist and experts in three key areas: a physiotherapist for injury management, a nutritionist for nutrition education, and a mental trainer for stress management. At the start of the project, the psychologist conducts a self-confidence questionnaire and a survey to assess players' knowledge and feelings in these areas. These initial tests help establish a baseline and identify key areas for improvement. The psychologist then shares findings with coaches and specialists to refine intervention strategies. Over one season, a group of players in each country participates in targeted activities, with evaluations at the start and end of the season to measure progress. A collaborative exchange between expert coaches and specialists helps identify and address self-confidence challenges. Together, they develop awareness workshops, a training guide, and educational tools for players and families, shared via club networks. The project concludes with a final conference to raise awareness and a satisfaction survey to assess impact.
