Description | The project will consist of a first stage, related to the first stage of the aluminum smelter, consisting of (a) a 105 MW hydroelectric station on the Thjorsa River, at Burfell, (b) a 220 Kv transmission system connecting the station to Reykjavik, the capital and largest city, and to the smelter and (c) substations with a capacity of 210 MVA. The project is expected to be completed in 1969. An eventual second stage, related to an expansion of the aluminum smelter which is planned for 1972, would increase the capacity of the plant to 210 MW at an estimated additional cost of about $7.5 million. |
