Burkina Faso - Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Programme

The Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation (DWSS) Programme was initiated by the Government of Burkina Faso with the support of the African Development Bank Group. The main challenge of the program is to significantly improve access to drinking water and sanitation for populations in 13 provinces of Burkina Faso, as well as those of the two largest cities in the country namely, Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The main activities of the programme are: (i) storm-water drainage and anti-erosion works in five (5) catchment basins in Bobo-Dioulasso; (ii) onsite and school sewage disposal works in Ouagadougou; (iii) construction of drinking water supply infrastructure in 13 provinces; (iv) capacity building of various structures involved in the programme implementation; and (v) conduct of a study on DWS in 80 secondary centres. The components of the programme are: A) development of basic infrastructure; B) study on DWS in 80 secondary centres; C) capacity building; and D) programme management.
