Burnaby Transit Centre (BTC) Facility Improvement

The project will implement improvements to the Burnaby Transit Centre (BTC), which operates and maintains bus fleet for routes in North Vancouver, to increase is capacity to operate and maintain an additional fleet of 130 forty-foot equivalent (FFE) buses in line with the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Vision. BTC is divided into two campuses: BTC-North (BTC-N) and BTC-South (BTC-S). Currently, BTC has 99% utilization (218 buses) and cannot support additional fleet without significant redevelopment. TransLink determined that it could increase capacity by up to 130 buses by relocating some functions provided in BTC to a new offsite location. The project will undertake the following to increase BTC’s capacity: • Relocate most of the BTC-N central complex and BTC-S central stores functions off-site to a new property (located in Richmond, BC). The functions that remain at BTC will be reconfigured into the vacated BTC-S central stores space; • Demolish the existing complex on BTC-N and pave the campus to support additional fleet storage; • Build approximately three new maintenance bays at BTC to support the additional fleet; • Renovate an approximately 100,000 sq ft complex at the new off-site location to support transferred BTC-N central complex and central stores functions; and • Renovate BTC-S to accommodate transferred BTC-N functions. Renovations would include spaces for functions such as wood shop/carpentry, office space, and minor storage as well as upgrades to HVAC and mechanical systems as indicated during design. Detailed design (starting August 2022) is excluded from the ICIP application and only Implementation scope will be delivered under ICIP. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2023, with completion planned for end of 2024.
