Burundi - Support to Agriculture Transformation in the Bugesera Natural Region Project (PATAREB)

The Project for Support to Agricultural Transformation in the Natural Region of Bugesera (PATAREB) was initiated because of the effects of large variations in the rainfall pattern that affect this area. PATAREB is part of the implementation of the Government's overall development policy as defined in the document "Vision Burundi 2025" and in the 2nd Generation Growth and Poverty Strategy Framework (CLSP II). The project targets fragile and economically, socially and environmentally disadvantaged communities, but with significant agricultural and fish farming potential whose sustainable development will contribute to improving food and nutritional security, increase the income of vulnerable small producers, alleviate the impact of poverty on rural households and strengthen the resilience of populations, including women and youth. Thus, it covers the natural region of Bugesera including seven (07) Municipalities of the Province of Kirundo and a Giteranyi Commune of Muyinga Province. With a total cost of UA 12.00 million (BIF 29.28 billion), the project will be implemented over a five-year period through three (03) components: (i) Support for Infrastructure Development Agricultural; (ii) Promotion of Agricultural Transformation and Improvement of the Living Conditions of Populations; and (iii) Management and Coordination.
