Description

Description

The development objectives of the Transport Resilience Project for Burundi are to provide efficient, safe, and climate resilient road connectivity along the main corridor linking Burundi with Tanzania, and to strengthen the institutional capacity to sustainably plan, develop, and preserve climate resilient road assets. The project comprises of five components. The first component is climate resilient road rehabilitation and social services. It consists of following sub-components: (i) upgrading of selected critical roads to climate-resilient standards; and (ii) socio-economic infrastructures for climate-resilient communities. The second component, non-motorized transport and road safety improvements will support the Government of Burundi (GoB’s) ambitious target of reducing road deaths by 50 percent by 2030. It consists of following sub-components: (i) road safety management; (ii) safer roads and mobility; and (iii) pilot post-trauma care program. The third component is institutional strengthening for climate-resilient road infrastructure and logistics planning. It consists of following sub-components: (i) climate-resilient road infrastructure and logistics planning; (ii) climate-resilient low-carbon transport sector policy and planning support; (iii) first generation of climate-resilient transport specialists, and engineers’ registration board support; (iv) strengthening climate monitoring, prediction, and forecasting of hazards for road sector resilience and vulnerability assessments. The fourth component, project implementation support will finance project management activities such as the acquisition of office equipment, operating costs, audits, communications, monitoring, and evaluation (M and E) including that of the implementation of environmental and social aspects, as well as the establishment of a grievance redress mechanism (GRM). The fifth component, contingent emergency response component (CERC) will allow for reallocation of credit proceeds to provide immediate emergency recovery support following an eligible crisis or emergency involving road infrastructure.
