Description

Reflected the vision of new millenniumHyundai E&C successfully completed sports complex nationwide, representing the international status of South Korea. Busan Sports Complex is one of the representative achievements Hyundai E&C made.Structure embodying waving surfLocated in Geoje-dong, Yeonje-gu, Busan, Busan Sports Complex is a large space can house 60,000 seats (80,000 audience) where the gross floor area is 92,638 ㎡ with 4 stories above ground and 1 basement level. With the lead of Hyundai E&C, the supervisor, seven companies participated in the consortium. The total of KRW 223.2 billion were injected in the project. The site has a dome with diameter of 265m where its center has a hole with diameter of 128m. Moreover, the 30m-wide pedestrian deck surrounded the complex, so audiences could come in and out safely in case of a large event. The aesthetics of curve was particularly noticeable since waving surf was applied to the roof and entire structure. The installed deck reminded us of the belt of Saturn. The structure had 48 columns representing roads stretching in all directions. The walls in 72 exits were removed to highlight openness.Based on our sophisticated technical competenceThe roof structure was originally planned to be constructed as a tenstar structure initially designed by Weidlinger Associates, Inc. However, as the burden of the construction cost increased due to the IMF financial crisis, the purpose of use was changed. It was changed to not only a stadium for Asian game, but also for World Cup. Accordingly, the roof opening design was changed suitable to the daylight condition for the growth of grass. The construction method was determined eventually as an elliptical cable-suspension structure designed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner (SBP).Since it was the first process tried in Korea at that time, Hyundai E&C made thorough construction preparation with the engineers of the Pfeifer Group through close consultation on each step to remove trials and errors in the construction process. Hyundai E&C also expected that a steel post connecting the upper·lower radial cable might have large influence in causing error, so we conducted inspection in each stage for precise manufacturing. Thanks to the above-mentioned efforts, we were able to make the planned deadline with additional efforts including the designing of a device inspecting roundness.Stood out as a landmark of BusanBusan Sports Complex received a grand award in “Korean Architecture Award (KAA)” organized by Korea Institute of Registered Architects (KIRA) in November 2002 by successfully hosting various events including the 2002 FIFA World Cup and 2002 Asian Games. Currently, Busan Sports Complex is positioned as not only a mecca for sports event, but also a venue for a training center for physical education and an event for the local residents.
