The Chartres metropolitan area is pioneering an innovative 5G deployment project, leveraging a two-decade-old open-access fiber optic network to provide high-performance, secure 5G coverage for public services. The project represents a collaborative effort between a local telecom operator and public authority, and it is of strategic importance for Chartres. Targeting 66 rural municipalities comprised within the Chartres metropole, the project prioritises sustainable development and supports major cosmetics companies, solidifying Cosmetic Valley's hub status. The operator has acted as a digital innovation lab, providing high-speed broadband, and connecting local and international businesses. The project focuses on four key use cases, identified by the project partners together with local stakeholders: • Environment: Real-time water management optimization through a secure IoT network. • MtoM (Machine to Machine) services: Private, high-performance environment for flexible deployment. • Cybersecurity: Ensuring data accessibility and confidentiality for city stakeholders. • Critical connections: Secure backup connection for continuous public service in rural areas. By leveraging 5G, the project promotes economic development in rural areas, while at the same time it allows the public authority to meet its digital innovation goals. Positive cash flows are anticipated in the medium term, benefiting local players with identified use cases and long-term innovations. The project is also expected to enable swift replications for other municipalities across the European Union.
