Description

Description

The Action is located in the port of Cadiz Bay and it’s included in the priority of Projects on the Comprehensive Network (Maritime Ports). The container traffic is handled at the historic terminal, in the Reina Sofia quay, that has great limitations (berthing line, depth and, area capacity). Also, it lacks of rail connectivity and the road access crosses the urban area of Cadiz. Thus, the Port Authority pushed the construction of a New Container Terminal (NCT), to be executed in 2 phases, with an area of 38ha, a berthing line of 1.099m and 16m depth. The NCT Phase I is already built. However, given the recently strong increase in traffic (due to the launching of several container services, among all, a daily service to the outermost region of Canary Islands, and a barge service to Seville through the inland waterway of Guadalquivir), it would be close to its saturation, both berthing line and land area. Thus, the Action consists in the execution of the NCT Phase II, and it also includes the the execution of a rail access and rail yard (Phase I and II), able to handle trains up to 750m length. The main objectives of the Action are: -Resolve the bottleneck caused by the lack of capacity of the NCT Phase I -Bridge the missing railway link between the port and the hinterland, developing direct rail services and promoting modal shift from road to rail -Contribute to the optimal integration and interconnection of all transport modes, allowing the development of feeder services through the Guadalquivir Euroway (Core Network) -Enhance maritime connections with the Canary Islands -Contribute to the sustainable development of the transport system, reducing external costs
