Cahora Bassa hydropower plant modernization

The project involves the modernization of the 2,075MW Cahora Bassa hydropower dam in Mozambique. The asset began commercial operations in 1974 and the sponsor is Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB). The modernization will extend the life of the plant by at least 25 years, enhance the reliability of energy delivery and reduce outages. It will also enable HCB to fulfil its contractual obligations to its off-takers and enhance regional integration of the electricity sector in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The $129.6 million (€125 million) debt package comprises up to $103.68 million (€100 million) from the African Development Bank and up to $25.92 million (€25 million) from the Africa Growing Together Fund.
