Caja del Rio National Conservation Area and Special Management Area

planned

Federal legislation to designate the 107,000-acre Caja del Rio plateau in New Mexico as two new protected areas: the Caja del Rio Special Management Area and the Caja del Rio National Conservation Area. The legislation aims to conserve and permanently protect the landscape's cultural, ecological, and spiritual values, prohibit new roads, mining, and transmission line construction, while allowing traditional uses such as grazing and hunting. It also requires federal managers to consult with nearby Pueblos and land grant communities and protects sacred site locations from disclosure.
