Description

Description

Opportunity Calgary’s need for a new courthouse has been apparent for more than 20 years. Justice services in the city including the Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen’s Bench and the four divisions of the Provincial Court were located in five separate locations causing confusion navigating the facilities. Additionally, all courts were near or over capacity. Innovations The Calgary Courts Centre was designed and built with future growth in mind, allowing for expansion to accommodate growth of the city. The project is an early P3, structured using the Design-Build-Operate model. Results The project resulted in the construction of two atrium linked towers with 73 courtrooms housing the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Provincial Court of Alberta as well as an underground parkade for 220 vehicles. Approximately 600 people work in the Calgary Courts Centre, including 75 judges and justices, over 180 security personnel and approximately 360 employees of the court, library and external agencies. The project will result in improved public accessibility to court and legal services; critical expansion space to address future needs; the ability to adapt new technologies for security, information  systems and communications; and better integration of court services and more efficient use and sharing of resources and space.
