Description
Description | Opportunity The project involves construction of a 40-kilometre light-rail transit (LRT) system that will connect downtown and residential communities in north and southeast Calgary as well as the Calgary International Airport, and the Calgary Central Library. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has signed an agreement with the City of Calgary securing funding for the first phase of the city’s Green Line LRT. All three levels of government are contributing to the project, including $1.53 billion each from the province and federal government. The Green Line, servicing the city’s southeast, is expected to cost $4.65 billion for capital construction in its first phase. “Now that this agreement is signed, it means we can move forward,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi on Wednesday. “We can push forward on getting this project out to market.” The mayor said he expects the project to generate 20,000 direct and indirect jobs in Calgary with construction expected to start as early as 2020. In March 2018, city council approved a design-build-finance model for the project. Stage 1 of the project will be procured in two separate phases. The estimated $1.2-billion Shepard phase consists of a 16-kilometre line extending from the proposed 4th Street station through the Inglewood/Ramsay community to 126th Avenue Southeast. It will also include maintenance and storage facility, 10 stations, numerous bridges and three park-and-ride facilities. "The Green Line is the biggest transit project in the history of Calgary. It will transform the way Calgarians move around the city. It will generate enormous social and economic benefits for generations to come," Notley said. "It's good for the economy, it's good for the community, it's great for the environment and it is great for everyone in Calgary." |
