California Canal Solar Power Project

A University of California study proposes covering approximately 4,000 kilometers of California canals with solar panels to generate 13GW of clean energy annually and save 63 billion gallons of water, enough for the residential needs of over two million people. A pilot project called the Nexus project demonstrated significant reductions in water evaporation and algae growth, as well as improved solar panel efficiency. However, the project faces challenges including high costs due to heavy steel support structures and potential ecological impacts. The project aims to provide clean power where agricultural demand exists, reduce transmission losses, and save water for cooling data centers.
