Description | The California High-Speed Rail project includes a detour around the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene to avoid disturbing the gravesite of labor icon Cesar Chavez. The detour involves rerouting the train through the Tehachapi Mountains with a curve that requires additional track, tunneling, and soil work to conceal the train and blend with the environment. The cost of this detour was initially estimated at $815 million in 2020 and has risen to around $1 billion with inflation. Due to recent allegations against Cesar Chavez, the High-Speed Rail Authority is reconsidering the necessity of this costly detour. |
