California High-Speed Rail Project

under construction

California's high-speed rail project will receive $1 billion annually through 2045 from the state's cap-and-invest program. The funding aims to complete the initial Merced-to-Bakersfield segment by 2033, covering gaps in the Central Valley portion, enabling private-sector partnerships and trainset procurement. Construction on the 171-mile stretch between Merced and Bakersfield is ongoing, with significant progress made including nearly 70 miles of track bed and over 50 bridges completed. Despite challenges such as the withdrawal of $4 billion in federal grants, the project remains optimistic about future federal funding and expansion to connect major population centers in California.
