California High-Speed Rail Project

under construction

California's ambitious high-speed rail project aims to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco. The project has faced significant cost overruns and delays, with the latest cost estimate soaring to $126 billion, far exceeding the initial $33 billion estimate from 2008. Despite the investment, no tracks have been laid yet, and the project's completion date is uncertain, with the earliest projected opening now in 2033. The project has been plagued by challenges including stringent environmental regulations and high labor costs, and currently faces a $90 billion funding gap. The focus has shifted to connecting California's Central Valley between Bakersfield and Merced.
