California High-Speed Rail Project

planned

The California High-Speed Rail project is a large-scale infrastructure initiative initially promoted as a $33 billion project to develop a high-speed rail system in California. The project has seen cost escalations to over $68 billion, with a recent announcement increasing the cost by another billion for a new 130-mile first phase. The project has faced challenges including overstated ridership projections, manipulated revenue projections, and lack of private sector funding, leading to concerns about its feasibility and sustainability. The project is no longer considered true high-speed rail but rather higher-speed rail, and it is expected to require subsidies and impose a financial burden on taxpayers.
