Description
Description | California Governor Gavin Newsom launched the Homekey initiative in 2020, a $3.8 billion program aimed at addressing homelessness and the housing crisis by providing funds to local governments to convert motels and other structures into housing for the homeless. However, the program has faced significant challenges including lack of oversight, unfinished projects, and underestimated costs. As of December 2025, around 3,000 homes remain unfinished, 2,000 units still need conversion to permanent living, and grants for 500 units were canceled or never appeared. The state is now creating a new housing agency to improve vetting and project success. |
