Description
Description | The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) initiated the Next Generation 911 project in 2019 to upgrade the state's 911 system. The project aimed to provide enhanced location services, allow communication via texts, and introduce redundancies to prevent system failures. The approach divided California into four regions, each with a different provider. After six years and over $450 million spent, the system largely failed and the project was terminated. Cal OES plans to restart with a statewide design similar to other states, which will take several more years and hundreds of millions more dollars to complete. |
