Description
Description | In 1995, Cambodian Indosat Telecommunication S.A (Camintel) was awarded an 11-year concession contract to undertake the rehabilitation, expansion, operation and maintenance for former UNTAC telecommunication facilities and to utilize those facilities to provide telecommunication services in Cambodia. Camintel was a joint venture between the Indonesian state-controlled Indosat (49%) and the government of Cambodia (51%). The joint venture installed a fixed cellular network in both Phnom Penh and Takmao, serving of 1,000 and 500 subscribers, respectively. In 1996, the company received a loan of US$8 million from Bank Bira for network construction. By 2003, Camintel had the widest fixed-line network coverage area in Cambodia, covering 21 provinces of the Kingdom. By 2002, Indosat was seeking to sell its 49% stake in the company. In August of 2005 it did so to local Cambodian telecommunication company AZ Communications (AZCOM) for US$1.5 million. Soon after, AZCOM received a license from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to install a CDMA 2000 system, becoming the fifth mobile service provider in the country. In the same month, the government of China provided AZCOM with a US$30 million concessional loan for the implementation of the project, a contract that was subsequently awarded to Huawei Technologies of China. Under the contract, Huawei was to provide and install CDMA equipment, transmission and supporting systems for AZCOM's CDMA 20001X project planned to launch in Cambodia at the end of 2006. In 2008, with the expected growth in company, Korean investor, KTC Cable Co., Ltd. replaced AZ Communications Co., Ltd. and became the crucial business partner with Camintel serving a nationwide coverage with myriad of Telecommunication services such as Fixed Phone—main service, Internet/E-mail, Leased Line, Public Phone, Pre-paid Calling Card and Pre-paid Internet Card and ranked as the first Leading fixed phone provider in all provinces. Now CAMINTEL is a member of BOOYOUNG group. Sponsor changed in 2008 |
