Description | In 1992, CamTel was awarded a 10-year license to operate an AMPS 800 network and the company started its operations in October of that year. The company was a joint venture between TelecomAsia, a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Group of Thailand, (70%) and Cambodian Ministry of Posts and Communications (30%). The initial investment was US$7.6 million. It had 5,000 subscribers by 1997 but only 3,457 by March 1999 due to stiff competition in the provision of mobile phone services. By 2003, Camtel, which was the pioneer in the market, had just 1,000 users of its low-tech analogue mobile service. The company's market share had become insignificant. Closed operations in Q4 2002.
