Description
Description | The Project consists of constructing a new multi-purpose indoor/outdoor training facility to host the 2023 Canada Winter Games. The site of the proposed facility is located on Bob Dewar Avenue in the City of Summerside adjacent to Credit Union Place and within the existing 2009 Canada Games Complex. The Project includes the construction of an 81,000 sq.ft. artificial turf field, a sports field lighting system, a subsurface drainage system, site servicing improvements, an air-supported all-weather dome with associated electrical and HVAC systems and a permanent concrete grade beam anchoring system. The structure will be a covered dome indoor facility during the late fall, winter and spring seasons and will fold away into an open air outdoor turf facility in the summer. The facility will also have accessible entrances. The Project will provide residents in the Prince County area with an innovative and diverse year-round training facility. Currently the only existing indoor facility on Prince Edward Island is in Charlottetown (Stratford). The Project will offer residents improved access to a training facility within their geographical location and will provide them the opportunity to participate in a greater diversity of sports year-round than those offered at the Stratford facility. The new all-season facility will limit the operational impacts of energy consumption and expenses for taxpayers through a two-tiered approach: 1) utilizing an existing solar farm onsite to drastically lessen the peak demand of electrical operations, and 2) employing the flexibility offered by the inflatable dome in order to use the facility all year long. Additionally, the Project will support the City of Summerside’s ability to host future national soccer, football and lacrosse events. |
