Description | The project entails the construction and financing of 45km canal running from the Durusu region on Istanbul's Black Sea coast to Kucukcekmece Lake on the Sea of Marmara. It will be 25m deep and range from 250m to 1,000m wide, depending on where the docks are located. The soil dug out will be used to build artificial islands and ports in the Sea of Marmara. The main objective of the project is to reduce shipping traffic on the Bosphorus Strait, one of the world's busiest waterways with 42,000 vessels passing through in 2016. The government plan to develop urban projects on the canal's banks and complementary logistical centers in the Black Sea. |
