Description

Description

The project consists of: upgrades to 5 wastewater systems; and 2 new wastewater treatment facilities in Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The scope of the work involves: the installation of new UV disinfection system at 5 existing treatment facilities; and the construction of two new wastewater treatment plants and associated collection. The project aims to improve the quality of the existing wastewater facilities and the wastewater being discharged. There are three components to this project: a) Glace Bay & Port Morien Wastewater Collection and Treatment: This component of the project will address two ’high-risk’ wastewater systems, Glace Bay and Port Morien as per Environment Canada’s Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations. The project will result in upgrades to the existing wastewater collection systems, new lift stations, collector sewers & combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and new secondary level wastewater treatment plants including an upgraded outfall. b) Battery Point Ultra Violet (UV) Disinfection System replacement: The disinfection equipment at this site consists of a Trojan UV 4000plus system which is now discontinued and has reached the end of its useful life. c) Wastewater Treatment Lagoon Upgrade: Disinfection upgrades at four of CBRM’s Wastewater Treatment Lagoons are necessary due to outdated technology and upcoming Federal regulations (WSER) for residual chlorine - Deadline of January 1st, 2021. The current disinfection method at Southwest Brook, Meadow Brook, Centerville and Tower Road Lagoons is established using chlorine pucks. This arrangement makes disinfection limits and residual chlorine limits very difficult to achieve in order to meet WSER. The objective of this component of the project is to install modern UV systems at each site.
