Cape Town MyCiTi Electric Bus Rollout

Cape Town is testing a 12-meter Volvo BZRLE electric bus prototype as part of its MyCiTi public transport network to reduce fossil fuel dependence and carbon emissions. The bus is undergoing rigorous stress tests on challenging routes to evaluate performance under local conditions before a larger order is placed. The project includes local fabrication of bus bodies to meet a 65% local content clause, driver training, and development of charging infrastructure. The first 38 vehicles are scheduled for service in July 2027, with plans for expansion and a solar-supplemented depot.
