Description
Description | As part of the Urban Wastewater Disposal Climate Initiative project, measures to rehabilitate and expand various sewage treatment plants are to be financed in the city of Cape Town. Cape Town, which currently has a population of around 4 million, has a total of 26 sewage treatment plants, some of which are extremely energy inefficient and are also reaching their capacity limits. For this reason, the city is planning investments to modernize and expand individual sewage treatment plants. The modernization of the sewage treatment plants, many of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s, will make a significant contribution to increasing energy efficiency by replacing outdated equipment. Increasing the cleaning performance of the plants will also prevent negative environmental impacts from untreated sewage or sewage sludge in the coastal city. At the same time, the planned measures will increase the availability of purified water for reuse in agriculture and industry, as well as drinking water, and thus contribute to security of supply in the context of climate change and the resulting increasing frequency of extreme droughts in the region. The aim of the FC project is to improve the climate efficiency of wastewater treatment in the city of Cape Town, to increase the cleaning performance of the plants and to increase the availability of treated industrial water (FC module objective). The FC measure thus contributes to reducing GHG emissions in South Africa and to adapting the urban water and wastewater sector to climate change (overarching development policy objective). The target group is the residents of Cape Town, who will benefit from improved water supply and wastewater disposal. In addition to private households, agriculture, industry and the tourism sector will also benefit from the project. |
