Description | Capital Telecom was licensed by the Ghanaian government to improve rural telephony access in the Southern areas of the country, largely unserved by Ghana Telecom. While Capital Telecom's Southern Regional Rural Telecommunications Network project was initially licensed on the basis of a build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme, the project's status was formally changed to a rural concession in 1997. The company, which started its commercial operations in 1996, had completed installation and commissioning of four networks hubs and terminal equipment to support subscribers. By February 2003 the company had rolled out less than 500 lines. In June 2003, Capital Telecom was awarded a grant of US$275,000 by the US Trade Development Agency (USTDA) to support a feasibility study to test unspecified low-cost wireless services for rural telephony. no info on 2005 update.
