Description

Description

The early extension of the Carajás Railway (EFC) concession contract was qualified in the Investment Partnership Program (PPI) at the 2nd Meeting of the PPI Council, through Resolution No. 10, of 03/07/2017, converted into Decree No. 9,059, of 05/25/2017. The benefits expected from the extension of the current contract, for another 30 years, will be the mandatory investments in security and the increase in capacity, which will be agreed by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT). The Carajás Railway, 892 km long, connects the Port of Itaqui, in Maranhão, to the mineral provinces of Serra dos Carajás, in the State of Pará. It is a high-capacity railway, built in broad gauge (1 .60 m) and almost entirely duplicated, with iron ore as the main transported product. In Açailândia/MA it connects to the North-South Railway North Section, which allows goods originating from the latter to access the Port of Itaqui. Recently, the S11D project was completed, through which another 101 km of lines were added to the railway. The Carajás Railway also carries out regular passenger transport between São Luiz/MA and Parauapebas/PA, with three weekly trains in each direction. The main goods moved in 2018, in thousands of useful tons, were: iron ore, 202,379; manganese, 1,137; pig iron, 461; fuels, 826; copper, 567. The extension, which will end on June 30, 2027, will also bring forward investments, which would only be made from 2027 onwards. Any grant for this project may be directed towards investments of public interest, such as new investments in the network itself or in other interventions on the national railway network (cross-investments). These improvements will be an obligation of the dealership. History – Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) obtained on 06/27/1997, under a new contract signed with the Union, the concession to operate rail transport services for cargo and passengers, provided by Estrada de Ferro Carajás. The granting of this concession was effected by the Presidential Decree of 06/27/1997, published in the Official Gazette of the Union of 06/28/1997. The company continued to operate these services from 07/01/1997.
