Description

Description

California Resources Corporation (CRC) has started injecting carbon dioxide into the Carbon TerraVault I facility at the Elk Hills Field. This project captures CO2 from a local plant and stores it permanently more than a mile underground in an old oil and gas reservoir, using existing infrastructure. The reservoir 26R can hold up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO2 annually at full capacity, equivalent to removing about 350,000 cars from the road. The project is a joint venture between CRC and Brookfield and is the first in California to receive final Class VI permits from the U.S. EPA. CRC has applied for permits for eight more reservoirs to expand storage capacity.
