Carbon TerraVault I (CTV I) is California's first operational carbon capture and storage (CCS) project located at Elk Hills Field in Kern County. It captures CO2 from California Resources Corporation's cryogenic gas plant and stores it permanently in depleted oil and natural gas reservoirs more than one mile underground. The project has a maximum annual storage capacity of 1.46 million metric tons of CO2 and a total storage potential of 38 million metric tons, equivalent to removing nearly 350,000 cars from the road each year. It has received final Class VI permits from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is part of a joint venture between California Resources Corporation and Brookfield.
