Description | The Carrier Dome is a domed stadium at Syracuse University that replaced the Archbold Stadium. Planning began in 1975, with a feasibility study and various site considerations. After negotiations and funding arrangements, including a $15 million grant from New York State, construction began in 1979 and the Dome opened on September 20, 1980. It features a white inflatable fabric roof supported by bridge cables and fans, and was constructed using 880 tons of steel and 30,000 cubic meters of concrete. The project cost approximately $27 million at the time. |
