The project involves an IFC investment in the Cartones America Group (CAME), a leading, privately-owned Andean Region manufacturer of containerboard, corrugated boxes, clay-coated paperboard, spiral tube board and specialty board packaging products. IFC would support CAME’s 2003-2005 investment program which includes - a new co-generation plant in Cali; - investments to expand CAME’s mill capacity in Colombia; - investments to modernize and improve efficiency of CAME’s operating facilities in Venezuela and Peru; and - environmental upgrades in all its operations. CAME’s operations are based on recycled paper and as such it encourages and supports the activities of approximately 40 recycled paper collector companies in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru which it is estimated provide jobs to about 800 people directly and about 8 000 indirectly. Its operations in Colombia include: - a paper mill (Cartones America) in Cali, - a corrugator plant (Litofan) in Cali, and - another corrugator plant (CORAME) in Bogotá. In Peru, CAME’s Papelera del Sur subsidiary has: - a paper mill in Chincha, and - a corrugator plant in Lurin. In Valencia, Venezuela, it has a corrugator plant (Venezolana de Cartones Corrugados C.A. V.C.C.) and in Quito, Ecuador, it has another corrugator plant (CRANSA). All CAME operations are located in industrial sites with the exception of the paper mill in Cali.
