Description | A green hydrogen and methanol project in Xinjiang, northwest China, powered by a 13.5GW solar array. The solar panels will produce green methanol, which will be further processed into polyester. The project includes a solar farm and electrolysers over 230 sq km, and a 2 sq km methanol chain, making it more than twice the size of Paris. It aims to produce 3.6 million tonnes of methanol annually from an estimated 675,000 tonnes of hydrogen. The methanol will be used alongside benzene derived from coking coal for the production of polyester-fibre products such as PET. The project also incorporates a planned coal mine to strengthen the upstream resource base and uses an integrated zero-carbon circular-economy model combining wind, solar, hydrogen, and methanol. |
