CASHEWNUT VALUE CHAIN PROJECT

This proposal seeks to revitalize the Cashewnut industry not only to mitigate the challenges in the industry but also tap the existing investment opportunities for increased livelihoods and economic growth. The main aim of the project is to enhance economic productivity of the cashew nut sector for increased income of over 1,000,000 value chain actors through employment creation and consequently increase food security and reduce poverty. The 5-year programme has not yet been funded and the implementation was in 3 Phases at a cost of KSh. 2 Billion The main focus ishould be on; • Value addition and product development • Enhancement of production and productivity • Market Development • Research and development Outputs: • 1No. Processing plant of 50MT per day will be procured and established which will later be upgraded to 100MT per day when production of raw nut increases. • 20No. Collection centres established in the Counties • Cashew nut nurseries by training farmers to produce 2 million Cashewnut seedlings Established • Top working, sanitation improvement and pest and disease control of old tree/ orchards. • Farmers trained on GAP to rehabilitate old orchards and establish and properly manage new ones. • Cooperative societies to support farmers in marketing their products established. • Cashew nut investment conference organized once per year to market the products and attract more investors in the industry
