Description
Description | Castillo Street is one of the busiest streets in the City of Santa Barbara, and is a critical walking and biking connection between West Downtown, coastal attractions, and Santa Barbara City College. Castillo Street is also a Vision Zero Priority Corridor, or an area where a high number of serious injuries or fatal collisions occur in a consistent pattern. The City received a Measure A grant to develop a concept design for bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements at the approaches to the Castillo Street undercrossing at U.S. Highway 101. The City will coordinate with Caltrans for this concept design, as they must approve any roadway striping improvements in the freeway underpass section. Design elements under consideration include buffered bike lanes, street trees to provide sidewalk separation and shade, pedestrian level lighting, and sidewalk widening and repair near the Castillo Street undercrossing and on Haley Street between Castillo and De La Vina Streets. The City requests community feedback on the project concepts. The goal of this planning effort is to develop a community-supported project that is ready for a 2024 grant application to fund final design and construction. |
