Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

completed

The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey, is one of the largest cathedrals in the United States. It features French Gothic-style architecture, with soaring 232-foot-tall towers and a copper spire over 300 feet tall. The cathedral occupies 45,000 square feet, similar in size to London's Westminster Abbey, and was dedicated in 1954 after construction started in 1899. It includes interior elements crafted in Europe, such as stained-glass windows from Munich, an Italian marble altar, bronze doors from Rome, and bells from Padua. The interior woodwork and church pews are made from Appalachian oak, and the organ with nearly 10,000 pipes was made in Orrville, Ohio. The cathedral is open to visitors most days, with free guided tours on the first Sunday of each month after noon Mass. It is located near Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark's main railway hub, Penn Station.
