The project consists of construction and operation of a new container terminal, with two berths totaling 600 meters and five gantry cranes. The project company, CII, is a new company created by the sponsors to carry out the venture. The existing main port of the Dominican Republic, Rio Haina, is severely congested. Additionally, shipping companies are precluded from serving the country with larger vessels due to limited water depth and the channel’s narrow turning basin. The new Caucedo terminal will have a deep-water (15 m) harbor, enabling shipping companies to serve DR with Panamax size vessels and thereby gain economies of scale. The terminal will also provide easy access to the Caucedo free trade zone and support its development. IFC will play a key role in creating an appropriate financial structure. It will also provide comfort to other lenders of the project given the political risks associated with this concession-based project.
