Description
Description | The project comprises the construction and operation of a nine thermal power plants (diesel) with total installed capacity of 137.2MW in the state of Ceara. The company responsible for the project is Ceara Geradora de Energia SA (CGE), a consortium between local investors and HLC Engenharia e Gestao de Projectos (50%), from Portugal. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$60 million. The nine plants, inaugurated in April 2002, were Distrito Industrial I and II (19MW each), Maranguape (16MW), Cacege (14.4MW), Aquiraz (13MW), Jaboti (12.8MW), Paraipaba (12.8MW), Coluna (9MW), and Pacajus (9MW). In June 2003, CGE moved four plants (Distrito Industrial I and II, Jaboti, and Maranguape) from Ceara to the State of Amazonas. In January 2002, CGE signed a PPA with the Brazilian Commerce Chamber for Emergency Energy (CBEE), which is a two-year take-or-pay contract for the nine plants. CGE’s power plants were part of a priority program for thermal power plants (Programa Prioritario de Termeletricas), implemented by the Brazilian federal government in 2000. The program, in order to foster the construction of thermal power plants, provided a short-term take-or-pay contract and, in some cases, financing for the construction of the plants (through the Brazilian Development Bank, BNDES).
