CEMAT is a integrated electric utility that serves the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The company serves a concession area of 901,420 square kilometers. The company had an installed capacity of 33.65-MW in hydro power plants. In its concession area, CEMAT had 395,45 customers from a total population of about 2.2 million in 1997. The company was partially privatized in November 1997 when the state government sold a 86.91% voting stake for $565 million to Rede and Inerpar (55.6% of the total capital). Eletrobras, a state-owned company, kept 41% of the total capital of Cemat. In April 2014, Energisa acquired Rede Energia S.A., which held 57.7% of the CEMAT's shares at that date, whose name was changed to Energisa Mato Grosso. In 1999 the company invested US$ 33 million (R$ 59.7 million), most of these investments were applied to distribution. The goal of the company was to reach new potential consumers units in the rural areas of the state of Mato Grosso. By the end of 1999 the company had 449,654 consumers units and the total electricity consumption in that year was 2,853,648 MWh. In 2000 the company keep its capex program, directing most of its investments for distribution in order to increase the number of consumers units. The total invested was US$ 31.5 million (R$ 61.5 million). The company increased its consumers units to 578,504 and the total electricity consumption reached the mark of 3,175,071 MWh by the end of 2000. In 2001 investments amounted US$ 44.5 million (R$98.9 million) and the number of consumers units increased to 625,688, however the total electricity consumption dropped to 3,015,824. The reduction in the consumption was due to the electricity rationing program carried out by the Brazilian government. This was a palliative program to overcome the electricity supply crises occurred in Brazil during 2001. In 2002 the CEMAT invested US$ 36 million (R$ 105.4 million) and reached 670,935 consumers units. The total electricity consumption in 2002 raised to 3,308,218 MWh with the end of the electricity rationing program. Much was subsidized under the Luz para todos program
