In April 2013, Empresa Hidroelectrica Maranon S.A., a subsidiary of the Canadian company Riverbank Power Corp., begun the construction of the 88-MW hydro power plant located at the Maranon River, Huanuco Department. The authorization contract had been signed with the regulatory agency in September 2009. In November 2014, the Peruvian company Celepsa - Compania Electrica El Platanal S.A., controlled by Unacem - Union Andina de Cementos, acquired the project. The company announced that it would finance the project with its own cash flow. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$ 183.9 million. The first phase of the project envisaged an investment of US$ 60 million in a 20-MW unit. As of June 2015, 30% of the construction works had been concluded, and operations on this unit were expected to commence in December 2016.
