Description

In July 2010, the Peruvian company Luz del Sur (80% owned by the American company Sempra and the remaining of the shares with other small investors) was granted the right to build and operate a hydro power plant located in the Vilcanota River, Cuzco. Besides Luz del Sur, only another consortium presented a bidding offer: Consorcio Chancadora Centauro-Sinohydro Corporation (Estados Unidos-China). The bidding criteria was the highest electricity power to supply to the state-owned company Empresa de Generacion Electrica Machupicchu (Egemsa). The concession contract was awarded in February 2011. The power plant was named Central Santa Teresa (90.7 MW). The sponsor committed to invest US$ 154.5 million in the construction of the power plant. Engineering and supervision of the construction works were undertaken by MWH (Montgomery, Watson & Harza), while the civil construction works was granted to Consorcio Río Urubamba (Graña y Montero and Astaldi. Equipment supply was under the responsibility of the Austrian company Andritz Hydro. As of November 2014, 95% of the construction works were concluded.
