Centralville Combined Sewer Separation Project

The Centralville combined sewer separation project is a major infrastructure effort in Lowell to separate combined sewer lines to improve sewer capacity, reduce flooding, protect local waterways, and reduce sewer backups. The project involves laying down large precast concrete drain boxes and installing new pipes and related infrastructure across the Centralville neighborhood. It is part of a three-phased citywide sewer separation project covering more than 400 acres, running 8 miles of new drains, sewers, and water mains, and installing two new large-diameter drain outfalls to the Merrimack River.
