The Brazilian company Cesbe S.A. Engenharia e Empreendimentos was granted three authorizations to build small hydro power plants located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (37 MW in total capacity). The 30-year contracts were signed with the regulatory agency ANEEL over the years starting in December 2000. The first contract signed was for the Carlos Gonzatto Plant, which was set to have a capacity of 9 MW. Construction works on this plant started in October 2004, and the unit became operational in June 2006. The sponsor created the company Campo Novo Energia S.A. to manage this project. Two other small power plant projects were authorized since then: Marco Baldo (16 MW) and Toca do Tigre (12 MW). Only Marco Baldo power plant started to be built (Marco Baldo). In 2005, the estimated investment in the Carlos Gonzatto Plant was worth US$ 10 million (BRL 25 million). In December 2005, Cesbe signed a US$ 6.3 million (BRL 15.4 million) contract with BNDES to finance this project. CESBE signed power purchase agreements for the CArlos Gonzatto power plants with the state-owned company Eletrobras. The agreements were set to last for 20 years through the Brazilian Federal program PROINFA (incentive program for alternative power generating companies). In 2010, constructions works of PCH Marco Baldo commenced. The investment at this power plant was estimated at US$ 45.4 million (BRL 80 million. Commercial operations began in June 2011. The construction works of PCH Toca do Tigre commenced in 2012 and were concluded in late 2012. Commercial operations of this power plant began in February 2013. The investment amount was estimated at US$ 92.2 million (BRL 180 million).
