Description
Description | The Chabahar port in southeastern Iran, comprising two terminals Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti, has been a centrepiece of India's regional strategic ambitions. India has invested at least $120 million in equipping the Shahid Beheshti terminal. The port allows India to build a trade and transit corridor with landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia, circumventing Pakistan. It is also the southern node of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). India pledged to invest $500 million to develop the port and operate it after a 2016 agreement. The project has faced delays and complications due to US sanctions on Iran, with the latest US waiver on sanctions expiring in April 2026, putting the project at risk. |
