Description | Chabahar is a deep water port located in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province, strategically important for India as it provides an alternative trade route bypassing Pakistan. The port is part of the International North South Transport Corridor. India, Iran, and Afghanistan signed a trilateral agreement in 2016 to develop the port. In May 2024, India and Iran signed a 10-year contract for India to operate the port, aiming to connect India with landlocked countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan. The development of the port is to be integrated with the INSTC to realize its full commercial and strategic potential. |
